Tips for tour in Michigan (along Lakes Superior and Michigan)?

Hello!

Two pals and I are looking to tour in the UP of Michigan (along Lake Superior) and down the Lake Michigan coast to Luddington in early July. Any tips/tricks/suggestions would be greatly appreciated about routes, places to stay, points of interest, etc. Looks like Google Maps is already leading us astray with trails that are clearly only for hiking .

Also most campsites are alreay booked through the summer! Suggestions about how to find a campsite would also be greatly apprecaited.

Should be a great journey (if the mosquitoes and black flies don't take too much of our riding blood)!

Thanks,

Maya

I can't really speak on the

I can't really speak on the main part of Michigan but I've circle toured Superior twice so I know the UP pretty well.  I see you are ending in Luddington but where are you looking at starting?

Hi! I've done this route on

Hi! I've done this route on my bike and it's lovely. In the UP I just stayed on the shoulder of highway 2 the whole time....not totally ideal but definitely got a lot of miles under me each day. The campsites I used were walk-in only, and in MI there's a law that a state park or campground can't turn away bike campers, they're required to give you at least some ground to sleep on. When you get to the bridge, the bridge workers will take you and your bike across for $5, I ended up asking a police station to call the bridge station for me because I couldn't find the right number but it all worked out. Enjoy!! Michigan is so beautiful :)

If time isn't an issue I

If time isn't an issue I would suggest not riding Hwy 2 and instead do roads closer to Lake Superior, just some really nice places to visit up that way.  Starting from the WI border going east FT 117 through Porcupine Wilderness is super nice.  Houghton and Calumet on the way up to Copper Harbour.  Canyon Falls SP, do the bike trail between Ishpeming and Marquette.  Consider a kayak trip  of Pictured Rocks with outfitters in Munising.

Past Munising it's not a bad thing to drop down south towards Lake Michigan.  Tahquamenon Falls would be the biggest thing you would miss.  I'm assuming your planning on ferrying to Mackinac Island, that's can't miss to me.
