Cycling the Mae Hong Son Loop, Thailand

Hi All,

I'm in Chiang Mai right now and planning to start the loop this Sat i.e. Nov 14 heading north-west first (Pai direction). It is a 660km loop through the mountains. I want to take it easy as I am travelling with panniers etc. Anyone would like to join? Could be more fun to have some company as we push out bikes up those hills and passes.

Any interest, anyone?

Jacek

Just curious...

Hey man, I know I'm too late but just about to do this loop, how was it? I'm gonna continue on down from mae Hong son to mae sot. Some of the elevations seem steep! :)

Hey Ronan,

Hey Ronan,

My sincere apologies for not responding sooner - it slipped my mind. A number of times

The main loop route can be difficult at times but doable, if you like climbing. Taking side trips and venturing deeper into valleys is where you can hit a wall - literally, but then the views can be nothing short of stunning.

From Chiang Mai to Pai there is some climbing with steep sections and work construction which does not help. After leaving Pai there is one major climb but quite enjoyable and great views once you reach the pass. Then down to Tam Lod area and after that some ups and downs to Mae Hong Son but nothing major from my recollections.

From MHS to Mae Sariang was an easy ride. I don't know the route onwards to Mae Sot but I heard it is pretty scenic.

I was using ridewithgps.com to plan my trip and get elevation profiles - they turned out to be pretty accurate compared to my Garmin readings, at least in Thailand.

I hope it helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hey jacek,

Hey jacek,
Thanks for getting back to me! As you can see you're not the only one whose terrible at keeping up to date with all these messages so no worries! :D
I finished down to mae sot which was generally all fine except that last day to mae sot which was pretty insane. Terrible roads and vertical steepness. Lovely though. Next stop Myanmar! :)
Thanks again
