bike in sweden

hi everybody!

just decided to make our 10-days-sweden-holiday to a bike-vacation!!! very much looking forward to it.

we will bring our tent and make use of the everyman's right and camp outside...

anybody has some tipps for us - what way to bike, where to camp, experience with the weather, costs of camping areas, etc., etc.

thanks people!

best,
marion&dinora

ps: and do u know where to rent bikes? I just heard that it's quite expensive (about eur 100 for 4 days) - are there cheaper options? are there any options to rent a bike at one place and give it back at an other?

Biking in Sweden

Hi,

I'm from Sweden (but living in Canada) and recommend you to check out the "Sverigeleden" route (Sweden route) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverigeleden. There are regional branches of this route in different parts of Sweden.

You can also check the routes that are part of the Euro vélo network: http://www.eurovelo.org/

Regarding where to camp, there are so many beautiful places it's hard to give advice unless you're a bit more precise regarding what part of the country you're going to.

Awesome and welcome to

Awesome and welcome to Sweden, when and where will you arrive?
From Stockholm you have some options, maybe head south to Söderköping and follow Göta Canal across the country past a few of the big lakes and end up in Göteborg, if time allows you then either follow the vest coast to Malmö or take the boat over to Denmark.

and if you are going to Stockholm, we love visitors! :D

hey oleee: first we were

hey oleee:

first we were thinking of biking from stockholm to goetheborg, or return but now we were asking around, and thinking of maybe traveling by train to goetheborg and bike around there (maybe the great lake Vaenern or more south on an old train-way) - do u know any of this (train-way, great lake, or from goetheborg to stockholm).

on our way back we would love to stay one night w/ u and ur family! we will be camping the whole time, so will bring our sleeping bags. if everything works out as thought we would love to stay w/ u the night from 20.10. to 21.10.

would be great.

saludito,

Train can work, just in case

Train can work, just in case you are not aware of it, you cant bring bikes on trains from Stockholm (SJ trains), so it needs to be packed and stoved :(
You are brave to go touring up here that late in October, hopefully the weather will like last year, fairly mild and somewhat dry!

Just send me a message when you know if you need a place, I think we are free the 20th and 21st, and it's easy to go to/from Arlanda Airport from our place :)

dear ole,

as u wrote, that we are brave to bike in sweden in october ... a friend just wrote me that nights can go below 0 degrees!? that's true?
could u recomend us sth (different)?

Hi, yeah October can be

Hi, yeah October can be really cold, last year was mild, but the one before was cold, hard to say how it will be this year, but expect some days (or nights) to creep toward 0 or lower..

It should not to be to much of a problem, usually if there is frost in the night it's gone when the sun comes up, usual days have around 10-15 degrees, so it's more of a "make sure to have warm sleeping bags and stuff".

Alternate bike transport from Gothenburg to Stockholm

Hi Ole,

Do you know of any alternate bike(tandem)+person public transport between these cities? I'm planning a 9 day bike tour leaving from Stockholm, but I think the round-trip may be too much for the allotted time.

Thanks!
Amanda

Oh wow, a tandem takes a lot

Oh wow, a tandem takes a lot of space.

But, Swebus accepts bikes: https://www.swebus.se/SwebusExpress_com/Customer_Service/Ticket-Information/Terms-Of-Travel/

Luggage may not be taken that is of a dangerous nature or that can cause considerable inconvenience, such as explosive and flammable objects and fluids, poisonous, infectious and corrosive substances, and weapons. Bulky items such as bicycles, skis etc. may be taken provided that the luggage is properly packaged and does not damage the luggage belonging to fellow passengers. For example, bicycles are to be packed with the handlebar rotated a one-quarter turn, and the peddles removed. The air in the tyres is to be reduced or emptied of air. The best solution is to pack your bicycle in a bike travel case. It is not permitted to bring furniture along. Bulky luggage is always counted as extra luggage, and a charge applies.
If a child ticket is purchased, it is permitted to take along a pram in the bus luggage compartment at no additional cost. In order to protect it, it must be packed in a plastic bag or other form of protection. No objects other than the pram itself can be placed in the plastic bag. Rollator walkers and wheelchairs may also be taken at no additional cost.

Thank you for the bus info

Ole, thank you very much for the information. It's good to know there's a way back if we run out of time. We may just plan a shorter route rather than relying on the bus. I found the Sverigeleden maps yesterday and it looks like there are a number of options from Stockholm.

Hi Amanda, I would not count

Hi Amanda,
I would not count on being able to ship the bike with the bus. I had a couchsurfer that tried that once and the bike travels as cargo (in a box), most likely on another bus than you.

Send them a message and ask, and include the size of the bike.

Back to Stockholm

I think there is an inland boat that goes on the Gote Canal between the two cities

Found it!

Thank you for the suggestion. Looks like there is a boat but it takes 4 days and is more of a cruise.
